Ricki ( Meryl Streep) es una guitarrista que lo abandonó todo para alcanzar su sueño de convertirse en una estrella de rock. Su ex marido Pete (Kevin Kline) le pide que viaje hasta Chicago para visitar a Julie ( Mamie Gummer), la hija de ambos, pues se está divorciando y necesita apoyo.
